I know what you may be thinking, the first anniversary is supposed to be paper but believe me I'll take this any day! My serger is a Brother 1034D Overlock and had been sitting in my amazon wishlist for "some day". So happy that day has come! It can do 3 and 4 thread overlock stitches as well as gathers/ruffles, blind hem and a rolled hem. So far I've tried out the 4 thread overlock in my project and the gather setting on some scraps just to try it. My husband gets a kick out of asking what else it can do because I turn into a child with a brand new toy and spout off all kinds of great features. He also has spotted my looking at the insides of all my clothes as I wear them to see what stitches it has inside it. :-D

Above is the t-shirt I made this weekend. The pattern is from the Sew U knits book which includes 3 Simplicity "Build by Wendy" patterns. The basic pattern is a size large crew neck t-shirt but she gives you directions on how to make changes into many other types of tops from that pattern so I made the scoop neck. My scoop turned out a little scoopier than I planned so I wear a tank under it. I think next time I would make the v-neck instead. Other than that I like it. Oh, I also cut the sleeves with the hem line on a fold so that the sleeve is actually 2 complete layers. This trick was used in another simplicity dress pattern I have used and I liked it. It does use more fabric obviously but I like the 2 layers of fabric personally. So the seams are done using the 4 thread overlock and I applied the neck edge with that and then used my sewing machine to topstitch with a twin needle. I made the binding longer than I should have though and the neck line gapes a little. Lesson learned. All in all I am very happy with my first serged item. I even wore it to work today! :-D

Baby Sundresses!

I am really loving this new Oliver + S Tea Party Sundress Pattern! I do have to admit, I've made 3 in total and I started out with the real pattern and then slowly made each subsequent dress less and less complex, but still, it's so fun! The colors don't show very well in the pictures...the pink is more pink and the lavender is more lavender but you get the idea. I still have to hem dres number 3 but I actually extended the lining of that one and made it reversible with buttons on both sides. Yay! Of the two that are finished, the pink went to my new niece Faith and the lavender went to the aforementioned "Baby Hicks," who we now know as Katelin. :-D I had the pleasure of meeting them both in the span of one week and what beautiful babies they both are! Well it sure has been fun sewing for all these babies! I hope to do more soon! Here are some more pictures. Supposedly you can click the pic for a larger view but I was having some trouble with the links when I posted it. Clearly they are not perfect but if they were they wouldn't have been made by me! :-D They were made with love nonetheless!

Finally! I have tried and given up on 3 prior attempts. I feel like I just won an oscar though because I need to thank the academy of amazing and helpful sewers who by way of blogs and other online postings helped me finally complete this one!

Inspiration: I have started reading several sewing blogs and Christina from Assorted Notions, whose blog and sewing both are SO much fun, posted this entry: http://assortednotions.blogspot.com/2008/02/i-couldnt-resist.html where she discussed a similar pattern to the one I used. She linked to Toya's dress made of this same fabric here:

http://trinilove.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/02/vogue-1027-summ.html and I knew I wanted this fabric and wanted to make this dress. I didn't expect to find the same fabric but on another link I found the mother load of adorable knit fabrics, http://www.gorgeousfabrics.com/shop/index.php and couldn't believe my eyes when they had this lust-worthy fabric! I already had the pattern onhand from when I first wanted to try knits. It is Threads Simplicity 3678, view A (http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=3678)

Construction: As I continued on my quest to learn to sew knits, I read all kinds of FAQ's, how-to's and troubleshooting posts. Anne from Gorgeous Fabrics replied to my email questions with some super helpful links (
On www.besewstylish.com I wrote a post, dated Jan. 11, 2008 on sewing with knits.

There's also an article on Threads' website:

http://www.taunton.com/threads/pages/t00013.asp

Look through the videos and see if there is one on knits there too.)

and i liked reading through timmelfabrics.com 's sewing lesson. When I was still ending up with skipped stitches, I found the tip that I needed to be sure to hold the thread tails and I think this reallly fixed things. I also switched to a ball point needle and polyester thread. Either way things went much better and YES!! I have finally learned how to sew knits!! I can't wait for the Sew U book to come out in May but until then I am pretty happy with myself. It's comfortable and covers my knees, which are two things I'm looking for in a dress for our trip to Italy next month. Even with a jacket over it I think it will be cute. Oh, here is a close up of the bodice, a photo which I suppose could also be named, "Hello Girls!"

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://l-delsews.blogspot.com/2008/03/finally-i-can-sew-with-knits.html' title='Finally! I have never been that interested in making a quilt until this event. I made it based on the Lap Quilt in Bend the Rules Sewing and had read about a way to cut the quilt back bigger than the quilt top so that you can just fold the back over and use it as the binding. I used pastel green and yellow flannel and in real life the bright yellow doesn't stand out quite as much. They are planning to be surprised about the sex of the baby so they chose the green and yellow color scheme. It was fun! And it turned out pretty well but of course, not perfect. I also made them a receiving blanket and burp cloths. I thought I'd make my co-workers cup cozies since we all drink coffee and tea in the office. We have paper cups but we don't have the cardboard holders so I thought these would come in handy. They're reversible and washable. And I got 17 done in one day! The fabrics are Amy Butler, Joel Dewberry, etc, quilt weight cotton. I tried it tonight to decent, if mixed results. In general these did not come out perfect. I also used a fleece liner inside so the part I left open to turn it inside out sticks out a little on each one. Oh well, such is life, it was still fun to couch the ribbon on. I am sure next time will be even better but in the mean time, I really like these!

Reversible Coasters

This project is from a book called Bend the Rules Sewing. Having never set a sleeve before, it was an adventure but with a great pattern from Fitz Patterns and some advice from my Mother-in-Law-to-be, they turned out better than expected. I say better than expected because I tried to fit each girl individually for it, adjusting the pattern myself rather than using a multisize pattern. So happy I finished them on time AND they fit! What a relief! Here is a picture taken by my Husband's (!) sister Kathy.

UPDATE: To "Big Mama" who wrote "Those bolero's are fabulous! Do you happen to know of a good websitefor bolero patterns? I'm trying to make one myself for a wedding I'm innext month." I didn't receive your email address with your post so I couldn't reply to you. I got my pattern from fitz patterns. I was waiting for a nice day to wear it and the beautiful weather finally showed up. It's a wrap skirt and I used the method in "Sew What! Skirts" to make it. No real pattern, just my own measurements and a yard stick, which I liked. The fabric, which I adore, is Amy Butler, who I adore. The day before one x-mas get together I actually completed 7 aprons in less than 7 hours! Of course I had cut and pressed all my fabric the night before, but still. Yay for aprons! (You can click on them for a bigger picture.)

I had planned to center everything around this great apple/pear fabric and had a solid fabric to go on the back side of each apron making it sort of reversible but on a whim I used this great twill floral print on the backs of all of the little girls' aprons and I'm glad I did! A couple of them wore them for the rest of the afternoon like they were dresses! You can see in the bottom picture the "Family aprons" with the reversible girls aprons in pink, the mom's in light blue and the dad's in brown. Oh yeah and there's my first potholder thingy. I quilted the fabric and everything! (Insert "Beaming with Pride" face here!) I also gave three of the little girls an assortment of cookie cutters tied together with a ribbon and then to mom and dad I gave a Family Cookbook full of recipes that everyone could help with. Having just learned to sew about a year ago, I can't believe how much fun it can be! Can't wait to make more!

V-Neck Apron

Well this time the new thing I tried was the v-neck style that looks a little like a wrap dress. Again, no pattern, just blind cutting and sewing. One of these days I'll learn to do things "the right way" but for now I like trying to figure it out myself. The design is not perfect but I am super happy with how it turned out. The fabric is a thick cotton, like home dec cotton duck? I think? Anyhow, I like that it's thick because it won't be as easy for liquid to seep through but it is wrinkly so whenever it's washed it will need to be ironed too. This will be going to my friend Kate for x-mas. Hope she likes it!

Apron Fever

I gave my first apron as a gift! My friend Vanessa invited us to their annual holiday dinner party so I brought her one as a hostess gift. It looked exactly like this one execpt it had a pink trim. This is the pear fabric that I have in three different colors and I hope to make "family aprons" for a couple of my relatives who have young girls. Of course I hope to inspire all kinds of warm fuzzy moments between mom, dad and kids, all cooking together with their aprons. Either way I am having fun making them! :oD My Next goal is to learn basic hand embroidery so I could maybe sew the person's name on a pocket for the apron. Unintentional Pleats that result from my less-than-perfect sewing skills. Not this time though! My life is so exciting that I feel it necessary to announce my first intentional pleats! A whole group of them in fact- a ruffle, if you will! The apron itself didn’t turn out as cute as it looked in my head, but the lesson was learned, so I’ll count it as an experiment. It’s a little…Minnie Mouse with that black edging. The fabric I’ve had for a year and didn’t know what to do with. In fact I got it the same day I got the leaf fabric in my first apron. (The Joann Fabrics nearby was moving locations and having the obligatory blowout moving sale and I was just learning to sew so I grabbed all kinds of stuff!) Anyhow, Stay tuned for the next exciting adventure at L-Del Sews.

My Handywork!

Here it is! My first apron! I used this fabric that I've had for a year and wanted to use it for something for the fall but couldn't find the right project. It's also my first try at using bias tape. Oh what an exciting life I lead! ;oD I haven't officially cooked in it yet because I think it would make a great gift for a friend who loves fall colors and leaves.

I actually posted this because I found this great site called tie one on where the gal who writes it posts a theme every month and has people send in pictures of aprons in that theme. I think it will be fun to see all the other aprons and I look forward to making more! Once I figure this whole blog thing out, I'll add her info.

Well there you have it kids. Here it is. Why did I start a blog? Because I'm obsessed with sewing. I am looking forward to posting pics of my handiwork. I am still new to sewing, so I'm no master, but it's fun and that's what counts! Know any good sewing sites? I'd love to hear about them! Either way thanks for reading and have a nice day!
